World Diabetes Day - Raising Awareness and Addressing the Diabetes Burden

World Diabetes Day, observed on November 14th, serves as a global platform to raise awareness about diabetes and its impact on individuals and communities worldwide. With India being dubbed the "diabetes capital of the world," with nearly 77 million people affected, the need for awareness and action is more critical than ever.

Diabetes is a chronic condition characterized by high blood sugar levels, which, if left uncontrolled, can lead to serious complications such as heart disease, kidney failure, and amputations. The global prevalence of diabetes is rising, posing a significant public health challenge.

The theme for World Diabetes Day 2021-23 is "Access to Diabetes Care," highlighting the importance of ensuring that everyone, regardless of their economic status or geographic location, has access to essential diabetes care and support. This includes access to medication, monitoring equipment, education, and healthcare services.

Initiatives like the Global Diabetes Compact, led by the World Health Organization (WHO), aim to reduce the risk of diabetes and improve access to treatment and care for people with diabetes worldwide. The Compact focuses on advocating for the priorities of people living with diabetes, promoting prevention efforts, and enhancing healthcare systems' capacity to manage diabetes effectively.
